About
Associate Professor Ana M. M. Sequeira leads breakthrough research in marine megafauna movement and conservation. She has secured multiple competitive grants, including through ARC (DECRA and DP) and internationally (e.g., European Commission). Ana is the recipient of the 2024 Fenner Medal from the Australian Academy of Science, 2020 Pew Marine Fellow, Recipient of the Early Career Award of the International Biologging Society 2021 and was a Finalist WA Premier’s Science Awards, 2022.
Based at the Australian National University, Ana is the Research Director, Founder, and Lead Coordinator of MegaMove, a decadal project endorsed by the United Nations Decade for Ocean Science. MegaMove pushes forward a new frontier in dynamic marine spatial management. It aims to improve marine megafauna conservation and demonstrate how big data in marine telemetry can be synthesized and translated into ecologically significant behaviours. A key goal is to address global scientific and societal challenges that are also highlighted in the Australian science and research priorities.
She also leads fieldwork-based projects aiming at tracking the movements of multiple marine megafauna species, and has worked with sharks, turtles, dugongs, sea lions, and penguins. The Gathaagudu Animal Tracking project is a strong example of her applied research, undertaken in partnership with Traditional Owners to combine Indigenous knowledge with tracking technologies to create the science need to support more effective marine conservation.
Ana is the Group Leader of Statistical Modelling and Marine Megafauna Conservation at ANU and continues as an Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of Western Australia (UWA) Oceans Institute. Her group develops innovative scientific analytical tools and applies well-established methods to address topical questions in marine conservation. Their research spans predicting patterns of marine species occurrence, investigating marine megafauna movement, and developing custom-made modelling tools to understand marine processes and support sustainable development.
