E&E Seminar Series: Why are things the size they are?

Weird as it may seem, our understanding of why species are the size they are is very limited. We don't really know why organisms grow, why they stop growing when they do, or why size changes when conditions change.

ABSTRACT
Weird as it may seem, our understanding of why species are the size they are is very limited. We don't really know why organisms grow, why they stop growing when they do, or why size changes when conditions change. In my group, we have been trying to understand the evolutionary causes and ecological consequences of variation in body size. Here I will provide an overview of what we've learned so far. I will draw on theory, comparative analyses and experimental evolution in an attempt to highlight what we do and don't know. Answering this fundamental question has taken on new urgency as we witness rapid changes in biological size at all scales.
