Australian Mountain Research Facility Summer Cadetship
The Australian Mountain Research Facility (AMRF) is currently accepting applications for a summer cadetship. The program allows students to contribute to ongoing research projects and conduct semi-independent investigations on topics associated with the AMRF. Applicants will have opportunity to contribute to fieldwork as well as related projects on campus at ANU.
This hands-on experience helps cadets develop problem-solving abilities, improve analytical thinking, and deepen understanding of contemporary approaches and research directions in mountain science. This cadetship is a great way to see whether field research is for you!
Ongoing research projects may include:
- Mountain plant community surveys and sampling
- Transplant experiments and measurement of plant trait plasticity
- Seasonal sampling of invertebrate communities
- Operation of instrumentation to measure ecosystem functions such as carbon dynamics, groundwater, and more!
We are looking for current or recent (2025 grad) undergraduate students with demonstrated interest and coursework experience in ecology or environmental science, who like being outdoors and working with a dynamic team (sometimes under quite challenging conditions).
Duration of the program is 12-20 weeks commencing November 2025, with an expectation of 3-4 d/wk. commitment on average. The cadetship is a volunteer role with all field expenses (food, transport, accommodation covered). Cadets will gain fieldwork and research experience and will receive mentoring and professional development.
For current ANU students there may be potential to also enrol in a research project course and earn credits as part of the cadetship. For the most highly ranked applicants there may also be an option for paid casual work alongside and in addition to the cadetship (1-2 d/wk.).
Interested applicants please complete the Expression of Interest Form by August 31, 2025. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview first week in September 2025. If you have questions or would like more information please contact Nathan Battey, AMRF Coordinator, Nathan.battey@anu.edu.au.
