ABSTRACT
Bioacoustics has revolutionised wildlife monitoring. Advances in recording technology and analytical tools have seen a rapid uptake of acoustic methods in research and conservation. This has opened up many opportunities for large-scale, efficient biodiversity monitoring. Despite this, the potential of acoustics to measure metrics other than species presence is still in its infancy. In this talk, I will discuss the potential utility of animal behaviour to bioacoustics and how this can improve its relevance to conservation. Using case studies from my research on black-cockatoos and a formal partnership with Bush Heritage Australia, I will discuss how bioacoustics’ focus on machine learning and analysis over the last decade has now landed us in a place to use the technology in applied conservation settings.
BIOGRAPHY

Dr Daniella Teixeira is a conservation biologist and Research Fellow at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. She was awarded a PhD in 2020 for her research on the bioacoustics of Glossy Black-Cockatoos and Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos. Daniella’s work has been featured in global media, most notably David Attenborough’s documentary Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet. Currently, Daniella co-leads acoustic monitoring programs for endangered Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos in Victoria and South Australia, and Glossy Black-Cockatoos in Queensland. Beyond black-cockatoos, Daniella’s research focuses on developing and applying acoustic methods for large-scale biodiversity monitoring. Currently an ARC Early Career Industry Fellow, Daniella works closely with the conservation NGO Bush Heritage Australia to research new tools for tracking biodiversity through sound.
