The phenology and ecology of grapevine scales in the region around the ACT are being studied to understand the reason these insects are a problem to the wine industry.

A potential PhD student interested in this area should apply for a scholarship through Wine Australia.   Domestic or International students are eligible, although WA does not pay international fees.  Student must be admitted into the PhD in EE at ANU.  Scholarships are awarded on the basis of 1) academic excellence, 2) the quality of an applicant’s Curriculum vitae, 3) the area of study of the proposed PhD program, and 4) the likelihood of the student’s ongoing involvement in the wine industry.  Scholarships are $30,000 per annum with $10,000 per annum operating funds (for APRA scholarship holders, the scholarship will be a top up to $30,000 per annum).  Although areas of interest are defined in the form, this work will be the relation between scale insects (Parthenolcanium sp.) and grape vine varieties in southeastern Australia.
