Susan Meek

Honorary Professor
Division of Ecology and Evolution

I specialise in working at the interface of academe, industry, government and non-government entities to increase awareness and understanding of the economic and social implications of science and technology and to facilitate the conduct, application and commercialisation of research and development.

As Principal of Sue Meek and Associates, I aim to apply over 30 years of experience in science communication, advocacy and policy development, and expertise in research administration, commercialisation and regulation to the benefit of institutions, organisations and the community.

My previous appointments include Chief Executive of the Australian Academy of Science, Australia’s inaugural Gene Technology Regulator and a range of senior State Government positions with responsibility for developing and implementing policies and programs to stimulate the conduct and appropriate application of research and development, and promote public understanding of science and technology. As an industry consultant I was principally involved in conducting technology assessments and the establishment of biologically-based business ventures.

I am an Honorary Professor at ANU’s Research School of Biology and have a PhD in marine biology from James Cook University, an MSc in oceanography from Southampton University and a BSc (Hons) in microbiology from the University of Surrey. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Technology and Engineering and the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Life Sciences Institute’s Washington-based Research Foundation and the ANU’s Centre for Personalised Immunology Advisory Board. In 2014, I was honoured to be appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to science.
