Species Sampling Models Generated by Negative Binomial Processes

We review the developments that led from the Ewens sampling formula via a Dirichlet distribution on the n-dimensional simplex to Kingman's  Poisson-Dirichlet distribution on the infinite simplex. The connection with a  GEM distribution, via size-biasing, is brought out. The Perman, Pitman and Yor approach to the  Poisson-Dirichlet using size biased subordinators is outlined, then a related new class of distributions from trimmed subordinators is defined. A method of fitting the new distribution to data is proposed and illustrated by application to species, gene and word count data.
