Shujuan Zhang, a former student of the Atkin lab and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology, has been selected for the prestigious German Federal Ministry of Education and Research award 'Green Talents – International Forum for High Potentials in Sustainable Development' to promote the international exchange of ideas regarding green solutions. The award strives to intensify international R&D cooperation in sustainable development, and winners are recognised for their outstanding achievements in making our societies more sustainable.

Shujuan joined the Atkin lab in 2012 on a CSC scholarship to undertake a two-year period of study at The Australian National University as part of her PhD at Harbin Institute of Technology. With the Atkin lab, Shujuan looked at the effects of colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on growth and yield responses of fertilized rice. Shujuan also undertook experiments to assess the impacts of variable nitrogen supply on the carbon and nitrogen economy of several rice cultivars and analyzed plant tissues for total nitrogen and phosphorus to better understand how some rice cultivars manage to grow well under nitrogen-limiting conditions.

We congratulate Shujuan as she continues to grow as a leader in the fields of interaction among plants, microorganisms and environments, particularly given this opportunity to become part an exciting, world-wide network of outstanding young minds and leading institutions.
