The marsupial Y chromosome has traditionally been portrayed as a degraded relic of the original therian mammalian Y, lacking the large autosomal addition that revitalised the sex chromosomes of eutherian mammals. My interest in the marsupial Y lies in its potential to provide insight into the early events of therian Y chromosome evolution.
