A lipid bilayer is a vital component of the cell. It is selectively permeable, allowing only ions and organic molecules to pass through. Ions and solutes are transported by membrane transporters. Dysfunction of such proteins can lead to physiological disorders.

Tracy Palmer is Professor of Microbiology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Newcastle University. She is an internationally-acclaimed molecular microbiologist who has made seminal contributions regarding bacterial protein secretion
PhD Candidate Pamodha Somasiri of the Verma Group, RSB, BSB gives his Exit Seminar - The use of Caenorhabditis elegans as a potential animal model to study the pathogenesis of Shigella flexneri.
The amino acid transporter B0AT1 (SLC6A19) has recently been identified as a possible target to treat type 2 diabetes, phenylketonuria and related disorders.
With the help of these biomarkers, we also evaluated the efficacy of four different SLC6A19 inhibitors biomarkers in wild type mice with metabolic disorders.
We identified several hypothetical genes and putative bacteriophage regions in Y394 genome, which warrants future investigation for determining the role of these unknown genes in relevance to pathogen virulence and survival in the host environment.
We have recently implemented an antibody microarray-based approach to systematically assess the host cell signalling response to intracellular pathogens; most of the antibodies on the array are phospho-specific, allowing to monitor the activation of signalling pathways by infections.
Incentives to define lists of genes that are essential for bacterial survival include identification of potential targets for antibacterial drug development, genes required for rapid growth for exploitation in biotechnology, the discovery of new biochemical pathways and understanding of the nature and origin of life.
