Workshop: Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) 2011
12th - 15th September 2011, Canberra, Australia

Scope
Entropy production is a defining characteristic of all non-equilibrium, dissipative systems. The goal of this workshop is to explore entropy production as a unifying concept in the study of a wide range of non-equilibrium systems. The workshop will examine the theory and application of Maximum Entropy Production (MEP) and related topics such as Minimum Entropy Production and the Fluctuation Theorem, as common principles across different scientific disciplines, including:
The workshop is the 9th in a series of international meetings on MEP and related concepts, held previously in Bordeaux, France (2003-05), Split, Croatia (2006) and Jena, Germany (2007-10).
- cosmology and evolution of the universe
- turbulent flow and convective heat transfer
- atmospheric and oceanic circulation (Earth and other systems)
- solid mechanics, elastic/plastic deformation, fracture mechanics and earthquake dynamics
- biological function and evolution from genes to the biosphere
- electrical, fluid flow, communications and transport networks
- human political, economic and social systems
- Earth system science and neo-Gaia theory
- non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and dynamical systems
