Birds’ feathers and eggshells are admired for their beauty. How their colours are produced and the functions of their colouration have been the subject of extensive study. However, we are still only scratching the surface in understanding how the optical appearance of these natural materials is shaped and constrained by species’ ecologies. In this talk, I will present insights from several recent projects investigating the production mechanisms of different aspects of avian eggshell and feather optical appearance (colour, glossiness, brightness), and discuss how these aspects may affect their thermal properties.
